San Jose: Crews use huge trucks to clear junk from hoarder home

Crews were in their second day at a San Jose home removing mountains of debris so massive that workers used two hauling trucks, each capable of carrying 72,380 pounds of material, to get the job done.

As of Wednesday morning, they still hadn’t made their way into the backyard.

The extreme makeover at 226 S. Claremont Ave. began Tuesday after a vote last month by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to declare the residence a public nuisance.

Appraisal board solicits feedback on seller concessions

An appraisal practices board formed by The Appraisal Foundation is accepting feedback on a second draft of a proposal designed to advise appraisers on how to adjust comparable sales for seller concessions.

The board was formed by the foundation in July of 2010 to issue guidance on recognized valuation methods. One of its focuses is on how adjusting comparable sales for seller concessions should be evaluated. The second draft of the techniques proposed is now available for public comment.

Support for mortgage interest cuts leave homeowners facing hardship

Cuts to the help available to homeowners struggling with mortgage repayments mean some borrowers are experiencing hardship and face losing their properties, Citizens Advice has warned.

The charity said a third of homeowners seeking debt advice because of changes to the support for mortgage interest (SMI) benefit were facing repossession action by their lenders. SMI is a means-tested benefit for those unable to pay their mortgage because they are out of work.

The government cut the interest rate at which SMI is calculated from 6.08% to 3.63% in October 2010.
