Community is essential to our way of life. A strong community means that you have a support system there when you need it and it offers a way for people to come together, share ideas and effect change. Community-building is often viewed as taking place during block parties, inviting neighbours over to enjoy your backyard pool, watching the kids play road hockey, kindly shovelling the snow off of the driveway next door or simply being outside and gardening at the same time as the other people on your street.
Community, then, is often viewed as requiring a house. Fortunately for downtown condo owners, you can have your condo and your community, too! Here are a few ways to build community and connect with your neighbours when living in busy downtown Winnipeg:
This is a great way to really find out what type of people living in your downtown condo building. Although it might be a little over-the-top to stop at every suite in your building to personally introduce yourself, it’s a good idea to knock on the door next to yours to say “hello” to the person living directly next to you. Slipping a note under the doors of the other suites is also a friendly, non-threatening way to let people know that you’re open to meeting them.
AGM’s are often attended by the majority of the people living in your building. You’ll see familiar faces and new ones. When you attend this yearly meeting, you’ll be able to learn more about the downtown condo building itself and you’ll be able to have a voice in the direction that your downtown condo building is going in.
Slip a note under every door and post a notice in the entranceway that you’re hosting a party – since it only takes a minute to walk down the hall, your neighbours are likely to at least stop by for a few minutes. One of my neighbours hosted a “meet and greet” last year and we all ended up going on a tour of each others’ suites! It was fascinating to see how different all of our suites were, and to gain insight on decor ideas.
If there’s a neighbour around your age or with similar interests to yours living in your downtown condo building, why not invite them over for a small get-together? Four to six are ideal numbers for this small gathering. Tapas are hot in Winnipeg right now and are a fun way to sample a variety of foods as you make small talk.
I was delighted to arrive home after the Christmas holidays to see that my next-door neighbour had left me a little box of homemade cookies and a note with good wishes for the New Year outside the door of my suite. Even if you don’t talk to your neighbours on a regularly basis – maybe you don’t even see them more than once a month in the laundry room or parkade – it’s still a nice way to show that you appreciate them as fellow downtown condo homeowners and that you enjoy living next door to them.
