Knowing what you want in your downtown condo is very important. When I first began looking at the condo I bought in downtown Winnipeg, the people that were helping me make my decision kept pointing out “flaws” about the condo. They noted that the downtown condo lacked a dishwasher, a balcony and hardwood floors. They asked me if I could see myself living in an open-concept space without a separate room for my bed.
These are all things you should certainly think about before buying your downtown condo. However, don’t get sucked into thinking that you “need” certain aspects just because someone else thinks they’re essential! To keep yourself focused and to reduce any overwhelming feelings you might have, ground yourself and think about things such as these three:
The stove, fridge and microwave at my condo were all brand-new – something I was very pleased about after having dealt with ancient appliances at my previous apartment! But since I live by myself, and actually secretly find washing dishes by hand to be a pleasantly relaxing activity, I was quite delighted to see that the downtown condo didn’t have a dishwasher built in. Some people don’t need a dishwasher; others don’t need a microwave. Think about what you need, and what you would like to already be at your downtown condo, before you buy it.
I bought my condo with the intention of building a separate bedroom at some vague point in the future. I know that I can live for several years no problem without a wall separating my bed from the living room, even though I will likely build the wall eventually. If you think that you can live in the space for a little while before making major changes like ripping down a wall or tearing out the carpets, then it might be a good idea to buy the place.
One of the best parts about downtown Winnipeg is that there are plenty of lovely areas to explore. Winnipeg Square, Waterfront Drive, The Forks and the various parks around downtown Winnipeg are all within walking distance. I don’t mind sharing my outdoor space with others in the slightest, and I rather like that I don’t have to ever deal with shoveling snow off of my balcony. However, having private outdoor space is mandatory to many people. If you can get by with just having a few house plants and making a point of going out to green spaces around downtown Winnipeg frequently, then you can cross this one off your list as a “necessary” item.
Remember, no place is going to be “perfect.” The downtown condo you find and buy very likely won’t be exactly what you were originally thinking of… but no doubt you will discover very quickly, as I did, that the real version is a million times better than anything you ever could have dreamed of.
