St. James is one of the areas of the city where families by houses.  It was originally a farming community and only became part of the city of Winnipeg in the 1960’s.  The houses in the area are sturdy and many of them are older with lots of character.

There are many reasons that people are buying houses in the St. James area of Winnipeg and one of them is convenience.  While it is not close to downtown Winnipeg where many people work, it is easy to get downtown when you need to.  If you drive, it is just a quick drive down Portage Avenue but you can also easily take the bus.  There are many bus options for those who choose to save on gas money by taking public transit.

There is great shopping and entertainment options in the St. James area, as well.  Of course, Polo Park is one of the most popular shopping malls in the city.  With a huge parking lot, a food court, and several nice restaurants, shopping is just part of your day at Polo Park Mall.  St. James Village also boast great cafes, specialty stores, and boutiques.  With unique stores like Chocolatier Constance Popp where you can sample gourmet chocolates, Lucy’s Hidden Closet with the latest fashions, and Arirang Oriental Market where you can get the tastiest Asian delights, St. James residents will never lack for a supreme shopping experience.

At the end of a day of shopping, cooking might be the last thing on your mind and St. James is a great place to be if you’re looking for a good meal.  There are all types of restaurants so you can get exactly what you are looking for.  Get great sushi at places like Sushi Cushi or get an authentic Asian meal at Hu’s Asian Bistro.  If you’re looking for more traditional fare try Silver Height’s Restaurant for some of their famous ribs or Rae & Jerry’s for their great steak.

St. James is also a great area for families with children because there are always things to do and see.  The Assiniboine Park and Zoo is the kind of place that kids love to go to every weekend time and time again.  With the expansive green areas it is the perfect place to have a picnic, fly a kite, or play Frisbee and the Zoo always has something new and exciting.  And don’t forget the Leo Mol Gardens.  It is a great place for children and adults alike to take in some art appreciation.  Grant’s Old Mill is another place where families can enjoy learning together.  There is a working replica of the Cuthbert Grant original water powered mill that was built in 1829 and it can still be used to ground wheat into flour today!  The Historical Museum of St. James can be found in the two story house that was built in 1856.  It is filled with furniture that comes from the 1860’s to the 1890’s.  There is also a Municipal Hall building to explore.

These are just a sample of the things you can find to do and see in the St. James area in Winnipeg.  When you buy a home in St. James, you aren’t just buying a house – you’re buying into a community of history.
